#1 The area of Michigan now known as Clinton County was inhabited by indigenous tribes. The Saginaw Chippewa, who were allied with the Ottawa, invaded the Sauk village and slaughtered everyone there, leaving no survivors. The Chippewa claimed the land as their own.

#2 The Chippewa people were relocated from Michigan to the West in 1837, and their land was given to Clinton County. Silas Rose, who had come to Michigan in 1836, was one of the first settlers in the county. He died in 1844, and twelve years later, Clinton County suffered the worst forest fire in its history.
