American history. Born, Gloucester, Mass., Mar. 31, 1944 to Leland G. Ryan & Gertrude Mary Boisvert Ryan. Educated: Gloucester H.S. (Class of 1962), U.S.M.A., West Point (1962-1963), & B.C. (BA 1967, MA 1988).

(cont.) Served in U.S. Army 1967-1976, in W. Berlin as Platoon Leader, 1967-1968, & as Aide-de-Camp to Brig. Gen. Samuel McClure Goodwin, Berlin Brigade (4th Battalion, 18th Infantry), 1968-1969. Promoted to Capt. & received 1st Army Commendation Medal while in Berlin. Decorated Vietnam combat veteran (served 1969-1971). 1971-1976, served in various capacities, incl. (at Fort Knox, Ky.) Commander of Infantry Company, personnel recruiter, & Public Affairs Officer.
