Newton City Hall City Clerks Office State of Mass / Microfilmed by Reproduction Systems for the Genealogical Society Salt Lake City Utah at Newton Mass 27 Nov 1970. Handwritten, alphabetical "Index to Deaths, Newton, 1848-1887" / Handwritten property records from the book called "Fences, Newton, 1769- " with 49 pages filmed, last record dated 21st day of July 1891 (notice in the middle that the tight binding and thickness of the volume means some of the information was concealed) / "Roads, Newton, 1788-1861" begins with "Index to Roads recorded in this Book," 206 pages filmed / "Secord Book for the Record of the Reports of Fence Viewers, 1872" (tight binding notice) begins with index, covers just that one year in 29 pages / "Newton Genealogies Approx. 1662-1844" with typed table of contents followed by records (family, vital, and town), all hand-transcribed - family records first (alphabetical), followed by a list of names and dates "Copied from the Monuments in Newton," town elected officials, history and town meeting notes, then vital records, incl. some "not on town records but copies from records kept by William Hyde of Newton" / "Perambulations of Newton, Book 1" (tight binding notice), including "Watertown & Newton" town line April 8, 1840; December 27, 1855; November 24, 1865; October 5, 1870; July 27, 1875 (also Brookline, West Roxbury, Brighton, and Waltham) / "Book 2, Publishments Approx. 1770-1855" with handwritten marriage intentions, 1770-1855 in 179 pages / "Letters & Index Approx. 1831-1850" transcriptions of letters with index at the beginning / "Sundry marriages and death notices found in the Columbian Centinel from July 1790 to Dec. 31 1794 inc. also Similar notices from the Boston Weekly Magazine and Boston Magazine 1802 to 1806. All that related to Newton are believed to be included in this list." Lists Journal, Date, Remarks, and Verbatim copy of notice / Copy of Record of Deaths as fopund in the Parish Register of St. Mary's Episcopal Church at Newton Lower falls, Mass. 1813-1847" handwritten copy / loose tax records and notes? from 18th century // THEN! with Locality of Record still listed as Newton City Hall, "Supplement to First Book of Births, Marriages, and Deaths" from Watertown, 1685-1693, with note at end: "The foregoing Records transcribed by Joseph Crafts, 1852, and for the purpose of printing in 1892 by B. F. Davenport," followed by "Loose papers dated from 1738-1774" consisting of (at least) Highway Lists and letters of instruction to the Surveyor of Highways from the Town Assessors from 1774, 1773 / "Volume I, Births, Marriages and Deaths, 1630-1690, on file in office of Town Clerk, Watertown Records" (note at end: "The foregoing Records were transcribed by Joseph Crafts, 1852" and "The foregoing Records were copied for printing by the Town of Watertown, 1892 by Chas. F. [illegible ], Bennett F. Davenport") / "Watertown Records, Volume II, Births, Marriages and Deaths, 1693-1823 (approx.), on file in office of Town Clerk," title page indicates the book was begun April 20, 1694 by Ebenezer Prout, Town Clerk, but there are a few 1693 records on the first page. Everything that is Watertown's is the original handwritten records. The vital records continue as noted through 1823. Records 289-296 are upside down and include birth records from 1695-1732. Much of record 234 (1809 Purpose of Marriage) is very faded and tightly written, some of which is illegible.MISC: Following vital records there appear to be notations and notes regarding specific vital records requests. One such letter was sent on behalf of the widow of John Hinds dated Oct. 5 1848. The letter includes details on when/where they were married and on John Hinds' service in the Revolutionary War. There is also an envelope with a Newton Falls address with financial calculations, 2 blank East Dewey Gold Mining Company stock certificates (no year or explanation as to relevance) and 2 pages of the Supplement to Oct 1898 "Our Dumb Animals" publication of The American Humane Education Society & Massachusetts Society of Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
